MEET OUR STAFF


Dr. Salvatore J. Shakir

Dr. Salvatore J. Shakir graduated from SUNY State College of Optometry in 1977. He was awarded recognition for both academic and clinical excellence. The Gordon Award for Clinical Excellence, Who’s Who in Americas Colleges and Universities for two years, Beta Sigma Kappa International Optometric Honor Fraternity were among his achievements. Dr. Shakir was one of four graduate doctors nationwide who were selected for the Vision Training Residency at the University Optometric Center, known nationwide as the leading institution for behavioral vision and vision development. Anually, for more than the past two decades, he has been awarded the Optometric Recognition Award from the American Optometric education. In the year 2000, the new York State Optometric Association named Dr. Shakir New York State Optometrist of the Year. He is listed in the Guide to Americas Top Optometrists, 2002-2003 edition. He has served on the Board of Directors of the Optometric Society of the City of New York for more than the past two decades, he has been awarded the optometric Recognition Award from the American Optometric Association acknowledging his dedication to continuing Optometric education. In the year 2000, the New York State Optometric Association named Dr. Shakir New York State Optometrist of the Year. He is listed in the Board of Directors of the Optometric Society of the City of New York for more than a decade and is proud to serve as a member of the Flatlands Lions Club.


Dr. Fred H. Wolfson

Dr. Fred H. Wolfson graduated from Brooklyn College in 1969, with a B.A. in Psychology. He then graduated Brooklyn College in 1972 with a M.A. in Special Education. Completed S.U.N.Y. College of Optometry program in Vision Science, 1976. Then Attended Hofstra University and completed a M.S. program in Reading, 1979. He then obtained a Professional Diploma (PD) in Reading from Hofstra University, 1980. Completed Doctoral Degree from Hofstra University in conjunction with S.U.N.Y. School of Optometry in 1982 and Downstate Medical School (Neuro-Ophthalmology). Studied for 3 years of Neuro-Opthalmology at Downstate Medical School and Kingsbrook Jewish Medical Center. Dr. Wolfson worked at the New York City Board of Education 1969 - 2002, during his 33 years in the school system he held many positions. Dr. Wolfson worked as a Special Education teacher specifically with children who were diagnosed Mental Retarded and Learning Disabled. He was a Special Education teacher trainer, Educational Evaluator, Chairsperson for the Committee on Special Education and Director of Special Testing Unit for the Hearing Handicapped and Visually Impaired. Dr. Wolfson taught Graduate level courses (Special Education Department) at Brooklyn College. He attained the rank of Associate Professor. Dr. Wolfson has been in private practice for 26 years. He specializes in working with children and adults who exhibit reading and visual perceptual problems. In his practice Dr. Wolfson has the capability to assess and diagnose the problem and then develop a reading remediation/vision therapy program to improve one’s reading ability.
